Mugimama - is this monkey music?

Beefheart-bonkers, furious fun
Last year's Niceland soundtrack showed Icelander Ornelius Mugison's diversity, but was nothing next to this. Exhilaratingly inventive, he mixes psychedelia, electronica, snatches of spoken voice and quite a few kitchen sinks, yet still believes spooky ballads are paramount, and lets organic sounds rule. Mugison is Tom Waits harmonising with Will Oldham, and all the vistas Beck is supposed to suggest shoot up. The warped Hitchcock fairground ride of the ''the chicken song'' says ''be intellectual, baby'' while eulogising both tits'n'ass and the courage of decapitated poultry.
