Artrocker - Marc Sallis reviews Mugimama
(read it at Artrocker)
Complex production and some strange sounding instruments make this a delicious piece of modern, artistic rock (not artrock). Distorted vocals (a personal favourite of mine) aid the Beck-does-Tricky opener on this album. The question the album's title raises of 'Is This Monkey Music?' is surely answered by the primal screams and screeches the music evokes. But this is far cleverer than basic primal instincts and the arrangements and complex production (the paper lyric sheet can be heard being turned in one particular track!) make listening to this album an experience rather than just a passive happening.
Fresh and bizarre lyrical twists can be found time and time again - who'd think of singing a song about a 'beautiful' chicken in the same breath as saying 'I love tits and ass'? Surrealism rules the roost when it comes to Mugison and its enthralling and unnerving music. Even during the first playback I'm already excited about hearing it a second time to see what the hell I missed on the virgin play. Brave, bold and beautiful. Marc Sallis
